Curriculum

Credit Hours: 40

The course will provide the students an understanding of the basic computer application skills that are necessary in a business environment. The students will be introduced to three Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The students will be able to develop the skills to prepare and maintain computerized accounting records, spreadsheets, business correspondence and presentations.

Students will obtain knowledge of business operations and activities that occur in a Canadian environment. This course reviews key concepts of internal functions as well as exploring effective, ethical, and paramount decision making processes that are assessed in successful businesses today.

This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive perspective of communication, its scope and importance in a business environment. Students will be introduced to many forms of business communication. Topics include: writing business letters, memos, reports and preparing and executing oral presentations.

Students will gain the understanding of the basic, mathematical concepts that underlie the foundations of a financial framework. Students will be instructed on finance and investment concepts used by Canadian companies today.

In this course, students will be introduced to a variety of accounting concepts, principles and procedures. Students will learn how to identify and record business transactions ethically and proficiently. Financial statements will be analyzed, prepared and reviewed to make vital business decisions.

Students will obtain a deeper analysis of accounting principles from the perspective of a proprietorship, partnership and corporation. Students will review reporting standards, recognize receivables and investment and asses related accounts. Students will learn a variety of business investments and complete financial statement analysis.

Students will learn concepts and principles of payroll, including legislation guidelines of the Canadian payroll system. Students will be given the tools to make proper calculations and evaluate what constitutes mandatory and voluntary deductions today. Topics include: the Employment Insurance Act, the Income Tax Act, and the Canadian Pension Plan.

Students will obtain an understanding of the procedures, purpose and structure of the Canadian tax system. The course will cover topics such as reviewing income tax for corporations, partnerships and individuals and provisions. The course will analyse investment income/losses, business and property income, and GST/HST. The course will examine the Income Tax Act structure and principles as well as complete the preparation of individual tax returns.

Students will apply their accounting expertise by creating a simulatedcompany and applying the accounting cycle to the company using popular accounting software. Through various scenarios, students will learn how to post a variety of entries effectively, and to produce financial statements accurately. Students also will produce bank reconciliation, payroll and general ledgers.

The course will provide the student with a hands-on opportunity to apply their accounting knowledge by preparing entries using computerized accounting software. Students will have the opportunity to compile financial statements and reports through assigned exercises. Students will be engaged with setting up a company, entering receivables and payables, and invoicing along with journalizing and posting entries.

Career planning is essential in order to obtain a successful career. Students must be equipped with foundational tools that will assist them to examine their abilities and competencies through an interview session. Students will be learning how to prepare a resume and cover letter by showcasing their professional experiences along with their ability to market their skills by leveraging the use of social media and current market trends.

Students will apply their accounting knowledge by creating a simulated company and applying the full accounting cycle to the company using popular accounting software. Students will be able to start their accounts from scratch, enter the opening balances and current transactions, generate month end reports and close the accounts. Students also will produce Bank Reconciliation, Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet.
